Yes for some functions: check the feature, not just the label
An iPhone dashcam can process camera images and save video locally without sending that footage to a cloud AI service. In AyniCam, camera AI and incident recording run on the phone, while map tiles, destination search, directions and weather use online services. This guide describes AyniCam 2.0’s documented architecture and recording limits. It is a preparation guide, not a physical-device airplane-mode benchmark. Before relying on a particular setup, verify the installed app, permissions, required resources and the functions you intend to use.

What a short saved clip actually contains
The recording buffer holds recent available footage while recording is active. Free saves up to 20 seconds at 720p without audio in an active driving context. Pro saves up to 30 seconds at 1080p with the camera recording, including stationary use; microphone permission is required for audio. A session that has just started or recovered from an interruption may contain less footage.
Losing a network connection and interrupting camera recording are different events. Local processing avoids a cloud-inference dependency, but it does not protect against a stopped camera, insufficient storage, heat or app interruptions. It also does not turn selected clips into an archive of every minute of your drive.
Prepare before a route with weak reception
- While connected, install the app, open it, complete any required setup and confirm the selected model and plan are available.
- While parked, check the camera view and necessary permissions. Grant microphone permission only if using a supported audio mode.
- Check free storage, mounting and power. Review the current recording requirements instead of assuming every plan saves while stationary.
- Plan navigation separately. A route or map previously displayed is not proof of complete offline coverage, and fresh weather cannot be assumed offline.
- If your plan allows a stationary save, make a harmless sample without internet and inspect the clip. Free’s driving-context requirement makes a parked save unsuitable for validating Free recording.
- Restore connectivity after the check. Do not create a driving hazard, handle the phone in motion or disable communications on a real journey just to test a claim.
Offline maps belong to the app that downloaded them
Apple Maps offers downloadable offline maps in supported areas. Those downloads do not provide offline map coverage inside AyniCam. Downloading data in one app is not a shared guarantee for another.
For example, if your route crosses an area with poor reception, decide in advance how you will navigate there. AyniCam’s local camera functions and its online map services have different requirements. If you plan to open a separate navigation app, also check the effect on the recording session; uninterrupted background recording has not been established for AyniCam.
Does local AI mean no information ever leaves the phone?
It describes where camera inference happens. AyniCam does not upload the camera feed or incident videos to its servers. Maps, search, directions and weather send the requests needed to their providers; location coordinates and technical information may be involved. Sharing or backing up a clip through another service introduces that service’s own handling. Check the privacy policy for the functions you use, rather than treating “on-device” as a claim about every network request.
Can I use a spare iPhone without a SIM?
A SIM card is not the camera. A spare phone may be suitable for local functions if it meets AyniCam’s iOS 17.0 or later requirement and is configured while connected. Without Wi-Fi or another internet connection, do not expect online maps, search, directions or weather. Do not assume emergency communications will be available from a phone without service. Check the exact device and your communication needs before choosing the setup.
Does offline operation remove the need for a subscription?
Connectivity and plan entitlement are separate questions. AyniCam offers a free download with Free functions and an optional paid Pro subscription. Working locally does not unlock Pro features or establish that purchase verification will never need a connection. Confirm your plan before departure and consult the current purchase terms for your region.
