Can an iPhone dashcam record with the screen locked?
Understand screen lock, app switching and recording interruptions on an iPhone dashcam. Check what AyniCam documents before relying on a saved clip.

Keep AyniCam’s camera session visible and active
Do not rely on AyniCam recording after you lock your iPhone or switch to another app. Our documented workflow uses an active camera session; uninterrupted background or locked-screen recording has not been verified for the released app. A phone that is still powered on is not proof that its camera is still capturing.
This distinction matters when you want navigation, calls and a dashcam on one phone. Decide which app needs to remain visible before starting the journey. If continuous coverage during those interruptions is essential, consider a separate recording device with documented support for that use.
Screen dimming, screen lock and app switching are different
| Action | What it means | What to assume for AyniCam |
|---|---|---|
| Lower screen brightness | The display is dimmer, but the app can remain visible. | This is not a promise of lower camera workload or longer recording. |
| Lock the iPhone | The phone enters its locked state. | Do not assume recording continues. |
| Open another app | AyniCam is no longer the foreground app. | Check the camera and recent footage again when you return. |
| Hear navigation or other audio | An audio service is still running. | Sound alone does not establish that video is being recorded. |
Why a background app can lose the camera
Apple documents a camera-session interruption when an app using the camera enters the background. Special camera capabilities depend on the application and system configuration. That is a reason to check the exact app—not to infer support from another dashcam app, an Android feature or a video-call mode.
A resumed preview cannot recover the missing interval
AyniCam saves selected incident clips from footage already available in its rolling buffer. Free provides up to 20 seconds at 720p without audio in an active driving context. Pro provides up to 30 seconds at 1080p while camera recording is active, including stationary use; microphone audio requires permission.
When a session is newly started or interrupted, less footage may be available. Seeing a picture after reopening the app does not show that the interval before reopening was recorded. Nor does saving a short clip create a complete journey archive.
Check interruptions while safely parked
- Note your iPhone model, iOS version, AyniCam version and selected recording mode. These make a support report useful.
- Open AyniCam and confirm the camera image is current. Change settings before driving.
- If your plan permits stationary saving, save and replay a short baseline clip. Free’s driving-context requirement makes a parked test insufficient to validate Free recording.
- While parked, lock and unlock the phone, then separately switch apps and return. Observe the camera state after each action; do not assume automatic recovery.
- With stationary saving available, inspect a new saved clip for duration and continuity. Compare the file with what actually occurred, not just the preview.
- If a gap or error occurs, keep the version details and contact support. Do not create a traffic incident to test recording.
Can I use Maps, CarPlay or a phone call at the same time?
Treat each as a separate compatibility question. AyniCam’s own map functions do not prove recording continues while a different navigation app is on screen. CarPlay recording support is not established in the reviewed product documentation. A call can also affect audio or camera availability; test the exact setup while stopped.
For journeys where the phone must frequently handle other tasks, the practical decision may be to separate navigation from video capture. Check the required coverage before selecting equipment.
Does Background App Refresh enable dashcam recording?
Enabling Background App Refresh is not evidence that an app can keep its camera session active. Likewise, a black-looking interface is not necessarily a locked screen. Use documented recording behavior and an inspected saved file as your checks. This guide offers a verification procedure, not a completed physical-device continuity test.
